Are menstrual cups safe? Know about the dangers of a menstrual cup

Menstrual cups are being used by over 5 million women currently and, the watchdog, the US FDA has not reported any exceptional case for us to believe menstrual cups are not safe.

A menstrual cup is made of medical-grade silicone, the same material which is used in catheters to insert in our bodies. This material is bio-compatible, which means, safe for human use. It is chemically inert which essentially means, it does not interact with your body.

Menstrual cups are completely safe to use if you follow the proper method of sterilization and other points of use.

12 Hours: Do not use it for more than 12 hours at a stretch. Remove it, empty and inert it again. The menstrual blood is a waste and must be let out.

Sterilize: Sterilize the cup by boiling it in the water. You may find there are people/companies suggesting that just dipping it in hot water is good enough. No, it is not. It must be boiled for 5 minutes. No steam, no hot water, no wipes. Boil it. Boil it before your period begins, once in the middle if the cycle lasts for more than 3 - 4 days, and last after the cycle.

Size: Do not use an oversized cup. If you have bought a cup that is causing any kind of discomfort, stop using it and get a smaller size. Safecup has a size guarantee policy, we send you another size if for any reason the one you have ordered doesn't work for you. You may hurt yourself by using a cup that is bigger than what is needed.

Quality: Menstrual cups are unregulated in most of the countries. You must select a trusted brand. It is advisable not to use colored cups and cups that are made in China without approvals. This is a medical device and utmost care should be taken before making the choice. It is not as simple as choosing a sanitary napkin.

TSS: No reported cases of TSS associated with menstrual cups.

Removal: There is a way to remove the cup. You need to pinch it. Some women have a high cervix, and they should use a model and size suitable for this. The cup cannot get stuck or swim inside you. It is just not possible. Yes, a little bit of learning curve is involved in removing the cup, but it is not difficult.
